The Ortiz de Montellano (POM for short) group employs a broad range of experimental tools to address questions of protein structure, mechanism, and inhibitor design. The tools include molecular biology, organic synthesis, enzymology, mass spectrometry, NMR, EPR, stopped flow spectroscopy, diverse analytical methodologies, and computational drug design approaches. These experimental tools are applied to the study of hemoproteins, with specific projects on cytochrome P450, nitric oxide synthase, peroxidases, heme oxygenase, myoglobin, and protein free radical intermediates. A second area of interest, the development of drugs for AIDS and AIDS-related syndromes, focuses on the design of reversible and irreversible inhibitors for the HIV-related opportunistic infections Kaposi sarcoma and drug resistant tuberculosis.
