How can I set my E-mail to automatically reply to senders while I'm away on vacation?

If you leave and don't need to access E-mail while you are gone, you can engage a program which automatically responds using a standardized reply. This reply can be customized as well, letting the sender know who to contact in your absence, when you plan to return, etc.

How to start the autoreply program

  1.  At the prompt, enter "vacationsetup on" and press the return key.
    socr:<2> vacationsetup on <ret>
  2.  This will bring you to the vi Editor.

  3. Add the date and contact person to the reply, then save and exit the vi Editor by entering a colon ( : ) followed by the letters wq

  4. When you return, type "vacationsetup off" at the prompt.
    socr:<2> vacationsetup off <ret>
  5. To view a list of senders who E-mailed during your vacation, type "more .vacation.db"
    socr:<2> more .vacation.db <ret>

You may also request autoreply service directly.

Include a copy of what you want your outgoing message to say, and when you get back, contact us again to turn the vacation command off.
