How do I set up Microsoft Outlook Express to check my email on socrates?

Open Outlook Express and click on Add New Identity.

The Connection Wizard will take you to the next screen. Type in your socrates login name and click OK.

At the screen Setting Up Internet Mail, click the radio button next to Create a new Internet mail account, then click Next.

At the Your Name screen, type your name as you would like it to appear on your messages. Click Next.

At the Internet E-Mail Address screen, click the radio button next to I already have an e-mail address that I'd like to use to enter login@cgl.ucsf.edu. (Note: Email addresses should no longer include the socrates server name)

At the E-Mail Server Names screen, make sure that your incoming mail server is set to POP 3. Type socrates.cgl.ucsf.edu for both your incoming (POP) and outgoing (SMTP) servers. Click Next.

At the Internet Mail Logon screen, type in your login name. It is not advisable, for security reasons, to fill in your password and ask Outlook Express to remember it.

At the Congratulations screen, click Finish

When you want to retrieve your socrates email, open Outlook Express and click on Switch Identities at the opening screen.

Select your socrates login name from the drop-down box. When you activate your Internet connection, you will log on to the socrates server, and your mail will be downloaded and stored in a folder under your socrates login name.

New additions:

1. To work with new security measures, follow this path to set the server timeout slider (check with socrates every 29 minutes or less):

Outlook Express News->Tools->Accounts->Select the Account->Properties->Advanced

2. To keep deleted mail from overloading your socrates quota, follow this path to change from the default setting (set so that deleted messages are not left on server):

Tools->Accounts->Mail->Select the Account->Properties->Advanced
