How can I check email on socrates?

When using a remote email reader to access socrates, some basic settings will need to be made.

• Return Address: your-login-name@cgl.ucsf.edu

• Incoming Mail Server: socrates.cgl.ucsf.edu

  It's recommended to use secure TLS/SSL connection and IMAP settings wherever possible.

• Check for mail: Every 29 minutes or less

• Leave mail on server: Optional but will have an effect on group storage

• Delete from server: Periodically download stored messages from your group account

• Authentication method: Password

• Domain address: cgl.ucsf.edu

• Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server: socrates.cgl.ucsf.edu

  Any @cgl.ucsf.edu email not sent via socrates can (and sometimes will) be rejected as a forgery.

• Outgoing Mail Port: Use port 587

  If you use the SMTP alternate port 587 (i.e., not 25), then your email client will work unaltered at home as well as on campus.
