Email is one benefit of having an account on socrates. The cgl address also corresponds to an account for using sequence analysis software. When you have a socrates account, your email address is:

your-login-name@cgl.ucsf.edu

The initials cgl stand for Computer Graphics Lab, the lab which manages email and maintains the forwarding list. While active, this cgl account will allow you to access two different email programs on socrates, pine and mail. It is also possible to set up Eudora, Outlook Express, Netscape or Entourage to remotely check email on your cgl account.
